Karol is a Russian born electronic composer and sound designer from Helsinki, Finland. The artist’s previous array of work consists of installations, soundscapes and compositions in the contexts of contemporary art, dance and theatre.
1∂∂1 is Karol’s first release of material composed solely for an intimate listening experience. It is a sophisticated study in sound and tone composition, drifting through textures, introvert soundscapes and varying characters of harmony, from beauty to intricate displacement. Minimal but distinctive melodies are reminiscent of modern classical composition, but through a revealing, slightly fractured lens.
Karol’s method of composition and production includes an ever-growing attempt to implement evolved and instrument-like user interfaces to controlling electronic sound sources. This gives the work the characteristics of played rather than programmed music.
The title 1∂∂1 refers to an undefined year in the past, unclear and blurry, partly fictional, like the pictures we carry in our memories often are. The recording is influenced by the artist’s attempt to piece together vague recollections of a past trip to the soviet era Black Sea.
Karol is part of 1-0-8, a collective curated by Niclas Kristiansson, known also by his producer alias Non Person.
Karol - 1∂∂1 is released in digital format and as a limited edition cassette through 1-0-8.bandcamp.com
